According to tourism officials, 75 million people visited Orlando last year, making it the most visited destination in the United States. Orlando had 68.5 million domestic visitors in 2018, an increase of 4.1 percent year-over-year, and nearly 6.5 million international visitors, an increase of 5.4 percent over 2017.
Although the overall 4.2 percent increase over 2017 was slightly smaller than the previous year-to-year increase of 5 percent, the robust return of international visitors – a segment that had softened in previous years – was particularly welcome.
The international improvement was driven by Latin American visitors, most notably travelers from Brazil and Mexico, according to Visit Orlando, the area’s tourism marketing agency.
The increase in Orlando visitor volume can be attributed to several factors, including a multimillion-dollar expansion of the convention center, new theme park attractions opening at a breakneck pace, and a years-long expansion of hotels and accommodations. The metro Orlando area presently offers more than 120,000 rooms, the second highest in the nation behind only Las Vegas.
